Homework

Grade One Homework Policy
The district’s homework policy recommends an average of  10 minutes of meaningful and purposeful homework per day for a typical first grader (when assigned).

There may be times when teachers send home assignments specific to classroom learning goals and/or projects.

On days when no homework is assigned, families might consider choosing one of the following suggested homework activities for all students. Please connect with your child’s classroom teacher if you need further clarification or guidance regarding homework.

Suggested Homework Ideas

Reading/Writing:
  • Utilize Raz-Kids
  • Read and/or listen to books from home or school
  • Read Poem Notebooks
  • Read and spell first grade trick words
  • Engage in everyday writing (i.e. lists, thank you notes, cards)

Math:

  • Practice addition/subtraction math facts to 10 to build fluency/automaticity
  • Count items efficiently and accurately
  • Orally recite and write numbers
  • Engage in everyday math opportunities (cooking, telling time to the hour/half hour, identifying/counting coins)

Due Dates to Remember

  • Poem Notebooks come home on Fridays and should be returned every Monday.

  • Book folders come home on Mondays (beginning in November) and should be returned end of every week (Friday)

  • Home/School Communication folders should be emptied at home every day and come back and forth to school every day even if they are empty.
